RHSE
Our Relationships, Health and Sex Education (RHSE) curriculum forms an important part of our wider personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE) and our commitment to nurturing the whole child.
Rooted in our Catholic mission and the dignity of every human person, our RHSE curriculum helps pupils to develop the knowledge, understanding, virtues and practical skills they need to flourish, build healthy and respectful relationships, make positive choices and keep themselves and others safe.
Our programme is carefully sequenced and age-appropriate, supporting pupils' physical, emotional, social and spiritual development from Reception to Year 6. It meets the statutory requirements for Relationships Education and Health Education and, in line with national guidance, we also recognise the educational value of providing age-appropriate sex education as part of a carefully planned and coherent programme. This complements the statutory Science curriculum and supports pupils to develop an age-appropriate understanding of their bodies, relationships, growing and changing, and the responsibilities that come with growing up.
We work in partnership with parents and carers, recognising them as the primary educators of their children, and ensure that our RHSE provision is faithful to the teaching of the Catholic Church while meeting statutory requirements. Our approach seeks to equip every child with the knowledge, virtues, confidence and respect they need to flourish as a unique and valued child of God.
Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)
PSHE helps children develop the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to navigate life successfully. Pupils learn about health and wellbeing, relationships, personal safety, aspirations and life in modern Britain. Through discussion, reflection and practical activities, children develop resilience, confidence and the ability to make informed and responsible choices.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
Our Catholic RSE curriculum promotes the dignity of every person and the importance of healthy relationships. Delivered in an age-appropriate manner, it helps pupils understand relationships, personal wellbeing, human development and growing up. Through this programme, children learn to respect themselves and others while developing the confidence to navigate life's changes.
Our Relationship Sex Education curriculum is designed to support pupils with acquiring knowledge so that they can make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships, whilst preparing them for a successful adult life. As a Catholic school, we have adopted a Diocesan approved scheme called ‘Life to the Full’ which is age-appropriate and sensitive to the needs and religious background of our pupils.
Our well-planned and sequenced programme does not just ensure that there is correspondence between phases and across disciplines but it also ensures that parents are fully involved in the planning and evaluation of the teaching of relationships and sexuality. Our parents are the children’s first educators and we work positively with parents to share the curriculum and provide opportunities for them to use the Parent Portal to further support their children’s learning and development beyond school life. Pupils should hear a consistent message about the meaning and value of human sexuality at home, in the parish and at school. This can only be achieved if the home, parish and school work to integrate the teaching of the RSE curriculum.
We place great importance on the Relationship Sex Education to our pupils at St Peter’s. It is taken seriously by school leaders, led properly by teachers who show dedication and commitment to the subject and taught as part of a whole-school approach by those who are able to celebrate the teaching of the Church on love and human sexuality.
