Academic Curriculum
Class 3 follows a carefully planned two-year curriculum cycle that supports children's transition from Key Stage 1 into Key Stage 2.
In Class 3, pupils deepen their knowledge and understanding through an ambitious curriculum that encourages enquiry, critical thinking and creativity. Building on prior learning, children are supported to make connections across subjects and apply their knowledge in increasingly sophisticated ways.
Through investigation, discussion and problem-solving, pupils learn to think more independently, ask thoughtful questions and develop as reflective learners. Learning is carefully sequenced to ensure that knowledge is revisited and embedded over time.
Through support, challenge and high expectations, every child is encouraged to grow in confidence, resilience and curiosity.

Reading
At St Peter's, we believe that reading is the key to unlocking learning across the curriculum and preparing children for the world ahead. In Years 3 and 4, our children continue to develop the fluency, comprehension and vocabulary skills set out in the National Curriculum, while fostering a lifelong love of reading. We are committed to ensuring that every child becomes a confident, capable reader who can access the opportunities and challenges of the future.
Reading for pleasure is at the heart of our approach. Every day, children enjoy at least 20 minutes of dedicated reading time, giving them regular opportunities to become immersed in high-quality texts and discover authors, genres and topics that inspire them. Alongside this, we use the Accelerated Reader programme to support children's progress. After completing a book, pupils take an online quiz to check their understanding, helping teachers to monitor achievement and guide children towards appropriately challenging books.

Through daily reading, meaningful discussions about books and a culture that celebrates reading for pleasure, we aim to develop knowledgeable, articulate and compassionate young people who are ready to thrive in school and beyond.
Statutory Assessment
Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) – Year 4
Every year in June, all Year 4 pupils take part in the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC), a short online assessment that checks how quickly and accurately children can recall multiplication facts up to 12 × 12.
The check consists of 25 questions, with 6 seconds to answer each one, and usually takes less than 5 minutes to complete.
At St Peter's, times tables learning is developed progressively from Year 1 upwards. In Year 3, children continue to build strong foundations through regular practice of the multiplication and division facts set out in the National Curriculum, helping them develop confidence, fluency and number sense. This learning deepens in Year 4, where pupils work towards mastering all multiplication facts up to 12 × 12 and completing the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) with confidence.
At St Peter's, we help children prepare for the MTC through regular practice and fun times tables activities, building confidence and fluency in mathematics.
Parents can support at home by encouraging little-and-often practice, using Times Tables Rock Stars, quick-fire questioning, and focusing on any tables their child finds more challenging.
The MTC is designed to be low-pressure, and our aim is for every child to feel confident, well-prepared and proud of their progress.
How Parents Can Support Learning at Home

You can support your child by:
- Encouraging regular reading and discussing vocabulary and texts.
- Practising times tables and key maths skills.
- Talking about current events, places, people and topics studied in school.
- Encouraging children to ask questions and explain their thinking.
- Helping them develop independence in organising their learning and responsibilities.
By working together, we can help every child develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to grow and flourish as independent, reflective learners and achieve their full potential throughout Key Stage 2 and beyond.
